Once the mains power supply has been efficiently converted from AC to DC, industrial systems often require further DC/DC conversion to provide the right sub-system supply voltage. This can be from 5 V to as low as 1.2 V for the logic supply voltage for ICs on a motherboard. Switching converters (such as buck converters) provide much greater power efficiency for DC/DC conversion than linear regulators.
